Shoreby Hill historic district returns to Town Council
      The Town Council on Monday heard from islanders who say a zoning ordinance to establish a historic district is needed to protect the lower Shoreby Hill subdivision.

Coast Guard recommendation renews LNG port controversy
      The U.S. Coast Guard’s recent conclusion that Mt. Hope Bay is a “suitable” location for liquefied natural gas (LNG) shipments has sparked renewed outrage among opponents of the proposed facility.

Proposed arts center site declared environmentally safe
      During a special meeting on July 29 at the town library, Jamestown Arts Center board members and environmental officials outlined potential environmental hazards, including lead paint and asbestos window caulking, at 18 Valley St., the likely future location of the JAC. The site was declared safe, according to state Department of Environmental Management offi cials.

Mark your calendar for Fools’ Rules Regatta
      Calling all boat builders! Mark your calendar now for the 32nd annual Fools’ Rules Regatta, sponsored by the Jamestown Yacht Club. The event will be held Saturday, Aug. 15, on the Town Beach at East Ferry. Participants will begin construction of the “vessels” with a 9 a.m. cannon start.

Club 420 U.S. national championship winners announced
      Three days of racing in the west passage of Narragansett Bay saw 152 crews battle it out between the shores of Ft. Getty and Saunderstown. After nine races, the winners were announced during an awards ceremony at the Ft. Getty sailing venue in Jamestown.

RI Lightning fastpitch softball to hold try-outs
      The Rhode Island Lightning fastpitch softball organization is looking for new, dedicated players that want to take their game to the next level. Try-outs for all age groups (12U, 14U, 16U and 18U) will be held on Saturday, Aug. 22, and Sunday, Aug. 23, at the Mount Pleasant Little League complex (next to Mount Pleasant High School) in Providence.

Marshall brothers unbeaten in J/22 racing
      Fleet 12 conducted its second Sunday race day recently under perfect conditions of bright sun and fresh breeze. Bad News, sailed by Mike and David Marshall – along with crew Jay and Matt Gowell – dominated both races, leading at all but the first mark of the first race, extending their wining streak to four in a row this season.

Watercolor workshop at Watson Farm
      Artist Natalie Pfanstiehl will teach a full-day watercolor workshop on Saturday, Aug. 15, from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Watson Farm in Jamestown. The event includes a one-hour demonstration of landscape painting, and assistance with composition, lighting and painting techniques, as well as a constructive critique of student work.

      What have I done? My life was great. It was peaceful. My husband and I enjoyed each other’s company, ate leisurely dinners, worked in the garden, walked and played gently with our aging English setter. Then I had a big idea: Wouldn’t it be nice to have another dog to keep the old guy company?

Save ‘food miles’ by growing vegetables

      I’m writing this on a rainy afternoon, having harvested the garlic, a pile of new potatoes and a couple of gallons of blueberries. If it were October, I’d make chicken with 40 cloves of garlic to use up some of the small cloves, and accompany it with boiled new potatoes and mint, a few beans and maybe a few carrots – all harvested from the garden.

Ferguson named to Blue Cross board of directors
      Christine C. Ferguson of Jamestown has been elected to the Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island board of directors. Ferguson is currently a research professor at the George Washington University School of Public Health and Health Services in Washington, D.C., where she has taught since 2006.
