Island siblings top finishers in judo competitions
Two young islanders recently took top honors in national and international judo competitions. Marco and Sofia Greco-Byrne both won gold medals at the Junior Olympics and silver medals at the Junior U.S. Open judo tournaments this summer.
At the Junior Olympics held in Orlando, Fla., Marco Greco-Byrne won the boys intermediate 1 (9 and 10 year olds) 34k division and was named outstanding competitor. Sofia Greco-Byrne won the girls juvenile A (11 and 12 year olds) 36k division.
At the Junior U.S. Open, held in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., Marco Greco- Byrne won second place and a silver medal in the boys intermediate 1 (9 and 10 year olds) 34k division. Sofia Greco-Byrne won second place and a silver medal in the girls juvenile A (11 and 12 year olds) 40k division.
The siblings both train at the Mayo Quanchi Judo and Wrestling Club in West Warwick, and have won several national titles. Both won gold medals at the Youth and Scholastics National Championships earlier this year. They are both ranked number one in the country in their division.
