Tolls prices increase Tuesday on Pell Bridge

Effective Tuesday, Sept. 8, at 6:45 a.m., tolls on the Pell Bridge in Newport will increase for drivers paying with cash and for out-ofstate drivers.

The change will not affect R.I. residents using EZPass transponders. That rate will remain at 83 cents per crossing. The EZPass rate for commuters will also remain unchanged at 91 cents per crossing.

Commercial vehicles will be required to pay an additional $1 per axle. Cash-paying passenger vehicles and non-R.I. EZPass holders will now pay $4 per crossing.

The R.I. Turnpike and Bridge Authority board of directors voted Aug. 12 to increase tolls after two years of public discussion and formal study. The board also voted to conduct a toll review every three years and to undertake a formal study of the reinstitution of tolls on the Mt Hope Bridge.

This is the first increase in tolls in the bridge’s 40-year history.
