Pick up free compost bags at island retailers
Free compost bags are available to all Jamestown residents on a first-come, first-served basis at two local retailers, Jamestown Hardware and the Secret Garden.
In 2006, the town received a grant from the R.I. Resource Recovery Corporation to purchase more than 5,000 compost bags. Though the supply is dwindling, bags are still available.
These reusable bags should be used for grass cuttings and leaves only. It is recommended that residents empty the bags at the compost site located at the town transfer station and re-use them.
Jamestown residents can use the compost area free of charge and no sticker is required to dump these materials at the transfer station.
Only grass cuttings and leaves may be dumped at the compost area. Household garbage or plastic can contaminate the site and make it difficult for town workers to complete the composting cycle.
