Commercial fishing Saturday with URI

Be a commercial fisherman for a day, bottom-trawling aboard the URI Fisheries vessel Cap’n Bert on Saturday, Sept. 26, and learn about the fishing industry in Rhode Island.

Participants will get to help sort the catch.

“We should catch flounder, lobster, bluefish, scup and a variety of other species common to the Narragansett Bay,” said Barbara Sommers, R.I. Sea Grant Fisheries Extension Specialist. Participants can bring a bag or bucket to bring fish home. Surplus fish are donated to the North Kingstown Food Pantry.

The trip runs from 12:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. and costs $35 per person. Closed-toed shoes and warm clothes are recommended. The trip leaves from Wickford Shipyard, 125 Steamboat Ave. in Wickford.

Advance reservations are required; call Tracy Kennedy at 874-6800.
