Climb the lighthouse, race around the island

The island will be hopping this weekend as we observe Columbus Day.

If you are looking to do something different, go climb the Beavertail lighthouse tower. Yes, the tower will be open to the public on Saturday and Sunday, thanks to the Beavertail Lighthouse Museum Association.

For a small donation, you can climb the tower steps to the top. Your reward is one of the most spectacular coastal views in all of New England.

Money raised from the event will go towards the ongoing lighthouse restoration. Be sure to visit the lighthouse museum while you are there!

On Monday – Columbus Day – the Jamestown Rotary Club is again hosting its annual bicycle race. This will be the 34th year for the Jamestown Classic, as the 19.1-mile race around Conanicut Island is known.

The most important part, though, is the return of the Citizens Race, better known as the fun ride, which is open to everyone, young and old. Don’t worry if you haven’t yet signed up. The Rotary Club welcomes late registrations on Monday from islanders, if space is available.

Even if you should choose not to ride, watching the racing is good fun. The annual bicycle race is a big fund-raiser for the Rotarians, who do good deeds with the money both on and off island.

Have a great weekend!
