Jamestown Classic

The Jamestown Rotary Club has been working for the past few months organizing the 34th Annual Jamestown Classic to be held Columbus Day, Oct. 12. Over 1,000 riders and spectators will be converging on Jamestown for the day. Racing will begin at 8:15 a.m. and be completed by around 1:30 p.m.

We have asked our participants and guests to park west of the fire station on Narragansett Avenue, leaving parking to the east open for residents. Parking restrictions will be in effect, so you will be able to park downtown. Also, parking will be limited at East Ferry, with entry and exit to that parking area from the exit. East Ferry will be open for business. The only road closure will be on Conanicus Avenue from Narragansett Avenue south to High Street and Walcott Avenue. For the safety of our spectators and riders, all streets exiting onto Conanicus in this area – Union, Lincoln, Friendship and Brook – will be closed at the eastern end.

There are a few things to remember when traveling around the island that will help ensure the safety of the riders and make your travel less stressful. Please use caution when traveling on the main roads and entering from side streets! If you see a pace car, please wait until the pace car, bike racers and trail car have passed before entering the road. Don’t worry; they will be traveling pretty fast and won’t slow you down. Traffic may slow down at the main intersections, but with your help and the help of the Jamestown Police, it will move smoothly.

Just a reminder: The race course starts on Conanicus Avenue at the recreation center. Riders will be traveling north on Conanicus to East Shore Road, where they will turn south at Summit. From Summit Avenue, they will travel the length of North Main Road through the intersection at Narragansett Avenue onto Southwest Avenue. They will then follow Beavertail Road out to the lighthouse and back.

The race then turns right onto Hamilton Avenue to the end of Walcott Avenue, where the racers head back to the recreation center on Walcott and Conanicus. Conanicus will be closed to car traffic at the intersection of High Street and Walcott; please use High Street and Howland Avenue as a detour.

With a little patience and caution, there should be little disruption in your travel to Narragansett Avenue and around the island. We should be wrapped up by 2 p.m. and life will return to normal.

This should be an exciting day of racing and a great opportunity to show off our island. Come out and cheer on the riders! The Rotary Club extends a big “thank you” to the community for your support with this, our premier fundraising event.
