Sidewalk art contest to be held this Saturday
This Saturday, Oct. 24, from 1 to 4 p.m., the Jamestown Teen Center will sponsor “Chalk Around the Block,” a one-day sidewalk art extravaganza at the recreation center.
Artists of all ages can show off their talent on the sidewalk around the recreation center, where each team or individual will create a pastel painting within a four-foot square.
Pastel chalk will be provided for each entry. No other medium may be used; however, artists may bring water and paintbrushes or sponges. Art work must be original. No offensive or copyrighted images – for example, SpongeBob or Batman – may be used.
Cash prizes in each category will be given, based on the number of entrants. Awards will be based on composition, originality, use of space and use of material. There will be a winner for each category: children 12 and under, teens 13 to17, adults 18 and older, and family teams. Family teams must consist
of at least one child under 12 years and one adult over 18. Children and teens can work individually or in groups. The category of the team will be determined by the age of the eldest member.
Observers can purchase tokens (5 for $1) to place in buckets for the art they like best. The work with the most tokens wins. There is a $5 entrance fee, due on the day of the contest.
Checks should be made out to the Town of Jamestown. Space will be given out on a first-come, first-served basis. Work must be completely done by 3:30 in order for judging to start. Awards will be given out by 4 p.m.
The event will feature live music from CODA, a group of local teens, and refreshments will be available. Funds raised from refreshment sales will be used for the Lawn School eighth-grade trip to Washington, D.C.
Artists can register on the day of the event or in advance by contacting Teen Coordinator Debbie Tungett at 423-7261 or by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org.
