Community Piano Association concert to be held Nov. 8
The Jamestown Community Piano Association will present the second concert of its 2009-2010 season on Sunday, Nov. 8, at 4 p.m. at St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church.
Students currently studying under Manabu Takasawa and Grace Urrico, who are on the piano faculty at URI, will play selections from their latest juried repertoire.
“The student recital has become an annual feature of our series,” said Janet Grant, an association board member. “Half of the students participating this year competed in the URI Piano Extravaganza! 2009 last April. We are looking forward to hearing exceptional performances from these talented young pianists.”
Among the performers is Jamestowner Samuel Hollister, who won the Bach Award at Piano Extravaganza! 2009. He will play the Toccata from a suite by Aram Khachaturian. Other Piano Extravaganza! contestants on the program are Sarah Boyd of Charlestown, Dennis Wu and Julian Wu from East Greenwich, and Suin Park from Kingston. Graduate and undergraduate students from URI will be chosen to complete the program.
The Jamestown community piano, purchased by the people of Jamestown in November 2001, is a seven-foot Schimmel grand. The Jamestown Community Piano Association is an organization whose purpose is to maintain the piano for use by the community and to present concerts that feature the piano. All concerts are free.
