Register now for trip to New York City
      Seniors interested in a day trip to New York City on Thursday, Dec. 17, with the Jamestown Police Association should register soon to reserve their place. The trip for senior citizens (ages 55 and up) is available on a firstcome, first-served basis. The trip includes a visit to Radio City Music Hall, free time for shopping and dinner on the way home.

Empty Bowls fundraiser tomorrow
      The annual Empty Bowls fundraiser will be held tomorrow, Nov. 6, from 3:30 to 7 p.m. at Melrose School. Local school children and volunteers have been making and glazing bowls for this event. Each guest chooses a bowl, a cloth napkin and a spoon; guests then select from a variety of delicious soups.

St. Mark K of C to host pasta dinner
      St. Mark Knights of Columbus Council 9197 will hold its Primo Pasta Dinner from 5 to 7 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 14, at St Mark’s Church Hall at 60 Narragansett Ave. The menu will include pasta and meatballs, salad, sausage and peppers, Italian bread, dessert and beverages. Tickets are $9 for adults and $5 for children 10 and younger.

Marionette theatre to perform for preschoolers
      On Saturday, Nov. 14, at 11 a.m. at the Jamestown library, Yoricks Marionette Theatre will present “The Waltzing Alphabet and The Tango of Numbers,” an original production for young children who are learning their letters and numbers. This 35-minute show is for children ages three to six years old.

Remember our veterans this Wednesday
      A Veteran’s Day remembrance ceremony will be held Wednesday, Nov. 11, at 11 a.m. at Veterans Square at East Ferry. During the ceremony, conducted by Jamestown’s American Legion Post and Veterans of Foreign War, Captain Clifton Russell Largess, retired U.S. Navy and a veteran of both World War II and Korea, will also be honored.

Salvation Army requests donations for Thanksgiving baskets
      Jamestown’s Salvation Army representatives are requesting food donations to supplement Thanksgiving baskets, along with gift certificates to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables. Items may be dropped off at McQuade’s Market during business hours before Nov. 23. Donations can also be made by calling Maggie Grenier at 423- 0175 or Sue Brayman at 423-0237.

Library to host Thanksgiving ‘potluck’
      The Friends of the Jamestown Library will host a special Thanksgiving get-together for children and their families on Sunday, Nov. 22, from 2 to 4 p.m. The event, sponsored by the Friends of the Jamestown Library, will include a “Charlie Brown” potluck Thanksgiving celebration, as well as a movie and crafts.

Dec. 31 is last day to redeem bridge tokens
      The R.I. Turnpike and Bridge Authority will no longer redeem Newport Pell Bridge tokens after Dec. 31. RITBA replaced the token toll-payment system with EZPass in January, 2009.

Date change to December for free women’s self-defense class
      The Jamestown Police Dept. has changed the dates for its free Rape Aggression Defense class. The class will now be offered Dec. 7, 8, 9 and 11, from 6 to 9 p.m., at the Jamestown fire department at 50 Narragansett Ave. This four-day class is a basic self-defense class for women ages 16 and older (under 18 must attend with a parent).

Wind energy committee to hold public workshop on town-owned wind turbines
      The Jamestown Wind Energy Committee will hold a public workshop on Tuesday, Nov. 10, at 7 p.m. at Jamestown Town Hall to present the results of a feasibility study examining the possibility of erecting one or more town-owned wind turbines.

Benefit concert for Sgt. Watson to be held tomorrow
      A benefit concert for Jamestown Police Detective Sergeant Frank Watson will be held tomorrow, Nov. 6, at 7 p.m. at The Dockside at Waits Wharf in Newport. The event will feature three bands: Garda, Those Guys and Ten-8. Watson’s daughter, Payton, died Oct. 19, 2008, after a twoyear battle with cancer. Now, Watson himself has been diagnosed with cancer.

      The Jamestown Substance Abuse Prevention Task Force has recently changed its name to the Jamestown Prevention Coalition. The contact person for the Prevention Coalition has also changed to Stephanie Nocon. The group is eagerly seeking new members.
