Kids can help decorate library this Friday
      Calling all kids – the Jamestown Philomenian Library needs your help to decorate the children’s room for the winter season on Friday, Nov. 27, between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. Materials will be supplied and no registration is necessary for this free program. The event is sponsored by the Friends of the Jamestown Philomenian Library.

Library announces Thanksgiving hours
      The Jamestown library will close today, Wednesday, Nov. 25, from 7 to 9 p.m. and will remain closed all day tomorrow, Thursday, Nov. 26, for Thanksgiving Day. The library will be open for regular hours on Friday and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and on Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m.

      The Friends of the Jamestown Philomenian Library will host a workshop on creating your own personalized tabletop boxwood tree for the holidays on Saturday, Dec. 12, from 10 a.m. to noon.

Community band to perform Saturday
      The Jamestown Community Band, under the direction of Bethany Clark, will sing and play Christmas carols on Narragansett Avenue on Saturday, Dec. 5, beginning at 4 p.m. The event will start at Baker’s Pharmacy. The band will also present its annual free Christmas concert at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 8, at the Portuguese American Citizens Club.

Central Baptist Church to hold Christmas fair
      Central Baptist Church will host its annual Christmas fair on Saturday, Dec. 5, from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The event will feature a “green” theme, as well as a number of new gift items, including hand-poured, eco-friendly soy candles, organic windowsill “gardens in a bag” and hand-crafted greeting cards.

      The R.I. Turnpike and Bridge Authority will redeem Newport Pell Bridge tokens until Dec. 31. RITBA replaced the token toll-payment system with EZPass in January, 2009.

Teen Center looking for a few good friends
      The Jamestown Teen Center staff is working to establish a nonprofi t organization that can raise money to help with its activities. Teen Center Coordinator Debbie Tungett said last week that the Teen Center wants to move to the next level of organization and in order to do that, it needs to raise money.

Jamestown Classic Bike Race to air on Cox sports channel
      The Jamestown Classic Bike Race will air tomorrow, Thanksgiving Day, on Cox Sports Channel 3 at12:30 p.m., following a live high school football game, and again at 9:30 p.m. The show, produced by Kettlebottom Productions of Jamestown in cooperation with the Jamestown Rotary Club, features Jamestown riders and beautiful Jamestown scenery.

Potter League to host cat adoption event
      The Potter League for Animals will hold a special cat adoption event, “A Home for the Holidays,” Dec. 1 through Dec. 12, at its facility at 87 Oliphant Lane in Middletown. All cats and kittens will be available for a special adoption fee of $62, which is 50% off the regular adoption fee.

      The book discussion groups at the Jamestown library will discuss “Oliver Kitteridge” by Elizabeth Stroup on Monday, Dec. 14, at 7 p.m. and Tuesday, Dec. 15, at 1 p.m. New members are always welcomed. The groups will also choose titles for the next six months of discussions during the December meetings.

      The Jamestown Teen Center will host an open house on Saturday, Dec. 5, from 4 to 8 p.m. All islanders are invited to check out the progress of the ceiling tile project, meet the Teen Center staff, register for programs and apply for the “Friends of Jamestown Teens” board of directors.

‘Holiday Fun’ event to support 8th grade trip
      On Sunday, Dec. 20, from noon to 4 p.m. at the Jamestown recreation center, the Lawn Avenue School eighth-grade class will host “A Sunday of Holiday Fun” for children in grades 1 through 5. Cost for the event, which includes arts & crafts, gym time, quiet time and more, is $20 per child. Proceeds will help fund the eighth-grade class trip to Washington, D.C.

Chorus to hold gala anniversary concert
      The Jamestown Community Chorus will celebrate its 60th anniversary with a gala anniversary concert on Saturday, Dec. 12, at 7:30 p.m. and on Sunday, Dec. 13, at 3 p.m. at the Jamestown recreation center at 41 Canonicus Ave. Tickets for the event, which will be sold at the door, are $12 for adults, and $8 for seniors and children.

St. Matthew’s Church to hold Christmas bazaar
      St. Matthew’s Church will hold its annual Christmas bazaar on Saturday, Dec. 5, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the parish hall. Purchase hand-knitted and crocheted items, crafts, jewelry and other affordable gifts for the holidays, as well as Christmas decorations and homemade baked goods. St. Matthew’s thrift shop will also be open during most of the bazaar.

      The Jamestown Teen Center and Teen Task Force will collect donations of new and gently used toys for children of all ages, books, DVDs, gift cards, kitchenware, toiletry items and gift wrap for the Women’s Resource Center, which provides services to families affected by domestic violence.
