Saturday events launch Christmas in Jamestown

The Christmas season on Conanicut Island is a merry and festive time of the year. And it all starts with the first Saturday in December when the whole community gets into the holiday spirit. This Saturday will be busy from dawn to dusk.

On Saturday, the island churches will host their holiday fairs. Many businesses in the village will welcome shoppers with holiday open houses. The island art association stages its annual craft sale. There will be caroling and holiday music across the island.

Santa Claus arrives by boat at the Conanicut Marina for a Christmas wish list-telling session at the Ship’s Store, a tradition the youngsters won’t want to miss.

On Saturday evening at East Ferry, a crowd will gather for the annual village Christmas tree lighting. There will be caroling, hot chocolate and a bonfire. The Jamestown Chamber of Commerce will collect donations for the food pantry, so be sure to bring along a canned food item.

Look for the Jamestown Press annual holiday gift guide this week. The magazine features Mrs. Claus on the cover and has lots of information and advertisements to make your holiday shopping easier.

Have a merry holiday season and remember to shop locally!
