Thieves steal merchandise for pet benefit yard sale

When Barbara Szepatowski headed over to the Jamestown Shores building at about six o’clock last Saturday morning to open an “early bird” yard sale to benefit the Paws and Claws Pet Fund, she faced a rather unpleasant surprise.

Much of her merchandise was missing.

“My yard sale was robbed,” she said. “Someone had pried open the door. I walked in and saw an empty table.”

Among the missing merchandise was a 14-karat gold-trimmed Lenox Christmas china set, along with some “doggie jewelry” and a case of Christmas lights. Also missing was about $300 in change, she said.

“We decided to hold an early bird sale so that people could shop before the church fairs,” she said, adding that money raised from the sale helps pay veterinary bills for senior citizens on the island.

Although she lost about $3,000 worth of merchandise and cash, Szepatowski said the sale will go on this Saturday, Dec. 12, from 8 to 11 a.m. at the Jamestown Shores building.

Anyone with information about the theft should contact the Jamestown Police Department.
