R.I. Foundation seeks applications
Nonprofit organizations that support the self-sufficiency and independence of women and girls in Newport County may be eligible for funding assistance from the Miss Swinburne Fund at the Rhode Island Foundation.
The fund memorializes Elizabeth H. Swinburne, a civic-minded woman of the early 1900s who established a school in her Newport home to educate young women in the science and skills of household arts. Following her death, the Civic League of Newport continued her mission and, in 2002, established the fund in her name to support scholarships and charitable programs for women and girls in Newport County.
The deadline for submitting applications is Jan. 8, 2010. Programs that provide certificates, degrees and/or formal credentialing for the participants are encouraged.
