Elizabeth Bennett left this world on Dec. 8, 2009, surrounded by her loving friends and family at the Jamestown home of her sister after a year-long struggle with leukemia.
Born Sept. 4, 1932, in Framingham, Mass. to Howard and Hope (Hodder) Bennett, she had recently returned to R.I. after living in Florida for 15 years. Prior to that, Betsy had lived in Bristol County for more than 40 years.
A professional floral designer, she worked for the former S. Kinder & Bro. florist of Bristol until its closing. She then toiled for many years as a clerk at the Bristol P.O. She was an accomplished gardener, grower of orchids and patron of the arts. She was also fond of travel.
Betsy was an artisan and craftsperson who worked in various media over the years. During the last decade, her prevalent passion was in the fiber arts, mostly weaving and specialty knitting projects, where her talent for design and her extraordinary color sense were readily apparent.
She is survived by her sisters, Rebecca B. Gunn and husband, Dennis, of Jamestown; Deborah Buckley of Portland, Ore.; her brothers, Peter Bennett, and wife, Christianne, of Ft. Pierce, Fla.; James R. Bennett and wife, Linda Scott, of Jamestown; 18 nieces and nephews and many friends.
Funeral arrangements are private. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to Blithewold Arboretum, 101 Ferry Rd. Bristol, RI 02809 or to Home and Hospice care of RI.
