Driving under the influence

• Saul Kaplan, 53, of 741 Elmgrove Ave. in Providence, was charged Jan. 30 with first-offense DUI after a traffic stop for speeding on Rt. 138 West, according to police. He was held at the police station and a re-arraignment was scheduled for Feb. 5 in Newport District Court, police said.

• Amy L. Sloat, 26, of 167 Scapa Flow Rd. in Charlestown, was charged Jan. 31 with firstoffense DUI after a traffic stop for a headlight out on her vehicle on Rt. 138 West, according to police. She was held at the police station and a re-arraignment was scheduled for Feb. 5 in Newport District Court, police said.

Underage drinking • Edward Machado, 20, of 41 Fern Dr. in Warren, was charged Feb. 1 with possession of an alcoholic beverage by an underage person during a motor vehicle investigation on Rt. 138 West, according to police. An arraignment was scheduled for Feb. 12 in Newport District Court, police said.
