Gilbert C. Poirier, 95
Road in Narragansett, passed away Thursday, Feb. 4, 2010, at home surrounded by his loving family. He was the beloved husband of Ann M. (Raab) Poirier for 52 years.
Born in Somerville, Mass., he was the son of the late Charles O. and Rose Anna (Rivard) Poirier.
Mr. Poirier served in the Merchant Marines and then in the U.S. Navy during WWII.
During the Depression, he worked for the Civilian Conservation Corps. He attended the Boston Museum School of Fine Arts and received a degree in art education from Tufts University.
Mr. Poirier was an art teacher for many years in R.I. public schools before retiring. After his retirement, he volunteered teaching English as a Second Language to adults. He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed bird watching, painting and gardening.
Mr. Poirier was a communicant of St. Mary’s Star of the Sea for over 40 years.
Besides his wife, he leaves three children: Anita Gryan, Janette Warner of Jamestown and Gerard Poirier; and three grandchildren, Melissa Gryan, Rachel Warner and Brooke Warner. He was the brother of the late Sr. Marie Regina Poirier.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Feb. 8 in St. Mary’s Star of the Sea Church; burial was in St. Mark Cemetery, Jamestown.
