Help teens and seniors purchase new van

The Senior Center and the Teen Center hosted their first event last Thursday to begin raising the funds needed to purchase a new van. Forty seniors, teens and their families enjoyed a nice meal, compliments of Freddie’s House of Pizza and Panera Bread.

Many local businesses donated prizes and made monetary contributions to our effort. We would like to thank Anita Haircut, Art’s Auto Body, Clark Excavating, Conanicut Marina, Fatulli’s Bakery and Deli, Jamestown Golf Course, Mama Leones Restaurant, the Narragansett CafĂ©, Ocean Essence Spa, Oyster Bar and the Secret Garden for their generous donations. We would also like to thank all of the community members who came out to support the effort.

The current Recreation Department van is shared between the Senior Center, Teen Center, Litter Corps and the Recreation Department summer camp. A new van would allow for more program offerings through both the Teen Center and the Senior Center throughout the year.

The Senior Center utilizes the passenger van for weekly bowling trips. The Senior Center’s long-term goal is to offer rides to and from the meal site as it once did in the past. The current van is not well equipped to handle passengers with more limited mobility. A newer model van would be equipped with handrails, more spacious seating and air conditioning.

The Teen Center takes numerous trips off the island throughout the year. A newer van would allow for these trips to be more affordable to teens and their families. Currently, their trips require them to rent buses for excursions more than 20 miles away. Renting buses has a very high cost attached to it. Each trip costs an average of $25 or more per person.

Proceeds from last Thursday’s dinner and a very generous donation from the Jamestown Rotary Club mark the start of our effort. We have $3,000 in the bank and still need about $27,000 more. We plan to reach out to local organizations who are interested in our goals.

We would also greatly appreciate any contribution community members can make. If you would like to make a donation, please make checks payable to the Town of Jamestown at 41 Conanicus Ave. Stop by the Recreation Center or the Senior Center to see where we are in our efforts.

Thank you for your support.
