Adkins to speak on ‘Dorade’ at lecture
The International Yacht Restoration School at 449 Thames St. in Newport will wrap up its spring lecture series at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 20, with Doug Adkins, who will speak about his new book, “Dorade: The History of an Ocean Racing Yacht.”
Olin Stephens drew the design for his first ocean racer in 1929 at the age of 21. Built for his father, Roderick Stephens, Sr. and launched in the spring of 1930, Dorade became the most famous ocean racing yacht in the world, dominating competitors on both sides of the Atlantic, as well as the Pacific. Her success changed the way people perceived design, safety, rating rules and speed in ocean racing.
Adkins’ book, which will be released this year on the 80th anniversary of the yawl’s launching, will tell the tale of her triumphs, travails and travels through a long and colorful history.
The lecture is free for members; $7 for non-members. Visit www.iyrs.org or call 848-5777 for more information.
