Idling gets you nowhere

To the residents of Jamestown – hopefully you are alert enough to know who you are – read this and then think about your behavior.

Idling gets you nowhere! I see it all the time – in front of the post office, in the pick-up line at school, in front of the deli while waiting for coffee, even at Mc- Quade’s while shopping for groceries. It is loathsome.

For every two minutes that you leave your car idling, you could have driven a mile! Many cars on this island hardly drive a mile each day, so why are you throwing your money away, fouling your air and adding to your nation’s trade defi- cit?

It is a fact that there is absolutely no benefit to “warming up” your car any longer. That logic goes back 50 years and no longer applies to today’s vehicles.

In other parts of the world, it is common practice to switch off the ignition and coast up to red lights, thereby saving the fuel re- quired to leave the engine running during that time. That might be a bit too much to ask of rich Americans– less than five percent of the world’s population burning 45% of the world’s gasoline while holding less than four percent of the world’s proven oil reserves!

But maybe – just maybe – we could think of our children’s health while idling those gigantic SUVs in the school pick-up line?

Come on folks, this kind of waste does not help anyone. It is the product of ignorance or worse. Please shut your engine off before you exit your vehicle – or when you’re waiting stopped for over 20 seconds. Thank you.
William Tuthill
