Island golf club kicks off tournament season

The Jamestown Golf Club began its tournament season on April 19 at the Jamestown Country Club. Club members battled wet, wild and raw conditions in an individual low-net tournament.

The low-net score of 33 was a tie between new Jamestown resident Wyatt Chidester and veteran member Mike Montoya, who is a former state RIGA senior net champion. Chidester is one of a number of military personnel assigned to Newport who choose to make Jamestown their home.

Third place went to Bill Kilkenny, with a net 35. As befitting a spring tournament, a last place finish by islander Ed Coughlan earned him a bouquet of flowers.

The tournament was highlighted by a hole in one. On his 60th birthday, Chip Young struck a Ping hybrid 4 into the wind on the fifth hole. Playing at a diffi- cult 145 yards from the back tee, the hole received his Titleist NXT Tour ball 10 feet from the pin and rolled smartly into the hole. Witnessed by Mike Montoya, Kevin Carty, and Richard DeRise, it was truly a shot that deserved a happy outcome.

The club’s next tournament is May 15. It will be a two-person modified Scramble format.

There is still time to join the club for this and five other tournaments it will run, as well as a multi-division club championship. Members are also eligible for many RIGA tournaments held at courses throughout the state. Enrollment forms are available in the clubhouse.
