Chase memorial tennis tournament May 30

The Conanicut Yacht Club will host the fifth annual Roger Chase Memorial Mixed Doubles Tennis Tournament on Sunday, May 30, at its tennis facility on Whittier Road in Jamestown.

The tournament is open to the public and the club encourages local participation to honor the memory of Roger Chase, an English teacher at the Jamestown Elementary School and long-time island resident who spent many summers as a teaching tennis professional at the Conanicut Yacht Club.

“Each year, the Conanicut Yacht Club is pleased to celebrate Roger’s legacy and recognize, among many other things, his contributions to improving the tennis program at the club and in the Jamestown community by hosting a fun-oriented tennis tournament that is open to the public,” said Robert Brown, tournament coordinator and club member. “While Roger’s students in the classroom and on the tennis courts may have sometimes been confused about whether they were working on their grammar or their ground strokes, they always appreciated the benefits of his teaching and his passion for the game of tennis.”

Play is scheduled to begin at 11:30 a.m. and run through the afternoon. The entry deadline is Friday, May 28, at 6 p.m. The draw will be limited to 16 teams, and an entry fee of $50 per team includes balls, prizes, food and drink.

The net proceeds of the tournament will be donated, as they have been each year, to the Jamestown Medical Fund.

White tennis attire and proper footwear are required. Contact Robert Brown at 617-529-0875 or robertkbrown@mac.com for more information.
