Veteran’s remarks were ‘outstanding’

The American Legion Post and the VFW picked a winner for their speaker at last Monday’s Memorial Day commemorative Veterans Square ceremonies at East Ferry.

The remarks expressed by retired Lt. Col. Peter Gaynor were outstanding. Not only did he recognize the ultimate contribution of those who died for this country’s freedom, he paid tribute to all that served. Most significantly, he highlighted the indifference and apathy of many Americans towards those who are overseas in combat today who have kept the fighting from our shores. Gaynor, in simple terms, in less than 10 minutes, certainly said the right things at the right time and in the right place.

As a veteran of two wars – WWII and the Korean conflict – attending Jamestown’s Memorial Day ceremonies over the past 20 years, I think Col. Gaynor’s remarks were the best yet. Thanks to our two veterans groups, who each year make us remember.
