We need you!

• EDITORIAL •

I’m edging my way into the editorial space today to talk about a subject near and dear to our hearts at the Jamestown Press – community journalism.

We’re a community newspaper, pure and simple. We’re all about us – you, me, our kids and our neighbors.

We’re not the New York Times or even the Providence Journal. More importantly, we’re not trying to be. We’re local and proud of it!

You’re not turning to us for breaking news on world events, but you do look to us for perspective on how world and state events affect our community on a truly local level. You turn to us for a recap of the Town Council meeting you missed, to find out what’s happening at the schools or to learn about upcoming events here on the island. You read – and write – letters and viewpoints that express how you and your neighbors feel about what’s happening in your lives.

We want to know what’s going on with you. That’s why we need your help.

Please, send us information about the milestones in your life, whether it’s an engagement, a wedding, a birth or a death in the family. Tell us about your promotion or the recent award you won. Let us know if your kid made the dean’s list, graduated, won a scholarship or earned a trophy playing her favorite sport.

Because the simple truth is – if you don’t tell us, we don’t know.

Feel free to get in touch, too, if you’ve got a great idea for a story. While we can’t write every story that’s suggested to us, we’re always happy to hear your ideas and we appreciate them.

Now, a word about photos.

Yes, we welcome your photos, too. But there are a few rules that apply.

We can’t use your photo if you took it with your cell phone camera, if it’s fuzzy, too small or taken from too far away. In general, we prefer pictures of islanders doing things – a lovely landscape shot is just that, but a shot of a Jamestowner enjoying that landscape is even better. And, please identify any people in the picture from left to right.

Finally, the number-one rule to remember when submitting information or pictures to the Press?

Include your name, phone number and email address so we can find you if we have questions.

Thanks for your help…together, we can make sure the Jamestown Press has you covered.
