Garden club wins first place award

The Quononoquott Garden Club recently won a national first place award at the National Garden Clubs’ 81st annual convention in Atlanta, Ga.

For its landscaping of Jamestown’s Town Hall, the club was the overall winner of the Kellogg Civic Achievement Award and received an engraved silver plate from Renee Blaschke, National Garden Club president. She commented that the award winners symbolize the best National Garden Clubs Inc. projects for 2009 for the U.S. and Latin America.

Committee chair for the project, Gloria Westlake, and thenclub president, Jill Meyer, thanked committee members Carolyn Armington, Anna Bernath and Joyce Allphin for their dedication and noted that the town’s cooperative efforts helped to make this project a success.

The club gave $6,000 for the project and the committee selected the plant material. Bernath drew up the landscape plans and Allphin prepared and submitted the book of evidence, which included photos and a narrative of the project.
