Ali’s Run wraps up successful season

Ali’s Run, Jamestown’s team in the Newport Babe Ruth League, closed out its season on July 6 with a heartbreaking loss to a tough and determined FoP team, 11-3, in the tournament championship game.

It was a memorable tournament, however, as Ali’s rallied after losing the first game of a double elimination tournament, 8-6, to FoP, by coming back to defeat Horan’s Building in a 1-0 forfeit, O’Brien’s Pub, 10-6, and then FoP, 8-7, forcing a final game.

In the June 29 game against O’Brien’s, Matt Rafanelli led the Ali’s offense with two hits and two RBIs. Drew MacIntyre had a hit and drove in two runs, while Danny Irwin had two hits and a RBI.

The July 1 game was a nail-biter with FoP. When the dust cleared, Ali’s Run squeaked out a come-from-behind 8-7 victory, thanks to Garret MacPherson’s game-winning hit driving in Eric Stroud with the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Ali’s was also sparked by great pitching from Graham Jamison and Joe Reale, who earned the victory.

Despite falling short in the final playoff game, it was a great year for Ali’s as the team finished undefeated (10 wins, 0 losses, 1 tie) and in first place for the regular season.

The pitching staff was solid, and included Graham Jamison, Nick Fay, Danny Irwin and Joe Reale, who did triple duty at first base and as an extra hitter. James Chamberlain was solid behind the plate.

The outfield crew of Eric Stroud, Drew MacIntyre and first-year player Logan Bradley was great, supported by infielders Garrett MacPherson, Alex Burke, Matt Rafanelli and Graham Jamison, who did double duty at second base. Adam Southworth and Josh Sheehan contributed in reserve roles as well.

The Ali’s Run coaching staff consisted of Tony Rafanelli, Andy MacIntyre, Kevin MacPherson, Roland Vigneault and Jim Bryer.
