Jamestown All-Stars make strong showing
The Jamestown Cal Ripken 12-year-old all-stars played last weekend for the R.I. state championship, playing Apponaug of Warwick in the first game of the tournament and losing 4 to 3. Josh Winkler pitched a great game, striking out 10 and knocking in two runs. Steve Cirella had a hit and knocked in another run for the Jamestown Team.
Jamestown also beat Coventry,12 to 0. Robert Haberland pitched a complete game one hitter, and the defense turned three double plays led by Brad Gaudreau and Teddy Roberts. Haberland scored three runs and Gabriel Zelaya-Rincon had three hits and knocked in five runs. Gian Varrechione scored a run and knocked in a run, and Kelly Curran had two hits, including a double.
Jamestown played Darlington of Pawtucket in the night cap, losing 1 to 0. Curran pitched a great game, striking out six and Roberts, Winkler, Cirella and Zelaya-Rincon all had hits for Jamestown. Jordan Smith played well defensively for the all-star team. Other members of the Jamestown All-Star Team who contributed to a successful tournament were Jack Gamble and Jack Winkler. Coaches for the Jamestown All-Star Team were Chris Varrechione, Mike Winkler and Steve Cirella.
