Simple assault or battery

Kenneth Hughes, 38, of 49 Freemont St. in Providence, was charged July 30 with simple assault or battery for assaulting a male subject and a female that attempted to stop the assault, police said. Hughes was not held at the police station and a trial date was set for Aug. 13 in Newport District Court, police said.

Driving after denial, suspension/

revocation of license

Kenneth Hughes, 38, of 49 Freemont St. in Providence, was charged July 25 with driving with a suspended/revoked license after he was stopped for a traffic infraction, police said. Hughes was not held at the police station and a trial date was set for Aug. 13 in Newport District Court, police said.

DUI charge

Rachel Maher, 41, of 144 Van Zandt Ave. in Newport, was charged Aug. 1 with first-offense DUI/drugs/alcohol after she was stopped for alleged high-speed erratic driving on Route 138, police said. Maher was not held at the police station and a court date is yet to be set for re-arraignment in Newport District Court, police said.

Bench warrant Dana Checrallah, 48, of Narragansett Ave. was taken into custody July 30 on a bench warrant, police said. Checrallah was held in Newport District Court, where a trial date is yet to be determined, police said.

Incidents

• On July 25, two bicycles were stolen from a house on Pemberton Avenue. The bicycles were found in Dutch harbor by two youths who were swimming and reported their find to the police. The bicycles were returned to the owners.

• On July 26, two vehicles were vandalized on East Shore Road between 8:30 p.m. and 5 a.m. A razorblade was embedded in the tire of one car and a nail was found in the other. The matter is being investigated.

• On July 28, two BBs were shot through a sliding glass window at a house on East Shore Road. The matter is being investigated.

• On July 31, a female assaulted a male in a parking lot on Narragansett Avenue. No arrests were made and charges were not filed.
