Martha Whipkey Leonard, 80

Mrs. Martha Whipkey Leonard passed away peacefully in her sleep on July 21, 2010. She succumbed to the eventual effects of successive strokes, as well as a connective tissue disorder. At the time of her death, Mrs. Leonard was a resident of Wildewood Downs, a nursing center in Columbia, S.C.

Mrs. Leonard was born in Wheeling, W.Va., on April 13, 1930. She was the only child of Shirley and Esther (Carroll) Whipkey. She graduated from Wheeling High School in 1948. Upon graduation, Mrs. Leonard took a job with Wheeling Steel. She married David G. Leonard of Elyria, Ohio, on Valentine’s Day in 1959. Shortly thereafter, the young couple moved to Rhode Island, where they resided in the cities of Warwick, Jamestown and Portsmouth. Both Mr. and Mrs. Leonard moved to South Carolina in 2007.

Mrs. Leonard was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She is survived by her husband; her two sons, Paul and Joel Leonard, and five grandchildren. She is fondly remembered for her outgoing and quirky personality. At age 68, Mrs. Leonard bought herself a fire engine-red PT Cruiser with a sun roof and flames. The car was a statement of her personality and her style.

A graveside service was held July 31 at the Cedar Cemetery in Jamestown, followed by a luncheon reception at the Portuguese American Citizens Club.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to the Lupus Foundation of America are appreciated. Visit www.FaganQuinnFuneralHome. com for condolences.
