Milton C. ‘Skip’ Bickford Jr., 78

Milton C. ‘Skip’ Bickford Jr., 78, died Aug. 18, 2010. He was the beloved husband for 58 years of Julia L. (Walsh) Bickford.

Born in Providence, he was a son of the late Milton C. and Sarah M. (Phillips) Bickford Sr. Mr. Bickford was chairman and CEO of National Bickford Foremost, Inc. in Providence. He had served with the U.S. Army during the Korean War and was discharged as first lieutenant. He then joined Bickford Engraving and Electro Type Co., founded by his grandfather, Joseph Brown Bickford, in 1916. After expanding the business and serving as CEO, he retired in 1989.

He served on the corporations of R.I. Hospital, Kent Hospital, Blue Cross of RI, Providence Public Library and Citizens Bank. He was chairman of the board of AAA and served on the board of directors of Ocean State Tax Exempt Fund, National Highway Safety Foundation, the Providence Rotary and the Chamber of Commerce, the R.I. Philharmonic, the Narragansett Council Boy Scouts of America, the Boys Club of RI, Kent County YMCA and Visiting Nurses Association of Kent County. He was a trustee of the Conanicut Yacht Club and the Museum of Yachting.

He was a member of the Warwick Country Club, the Squantums Assoc., the Providence Art Club, the Sons of the American Revolution, the Turks Head Club, the Hope Club, the Newport Country Club, the New York Yacht Club and the Coral Beach & Tennis Club in Bermuda. Skip was an avid sailor.

He was the father of Pamela Bickford Corsi, Shelley Bickford Koch, both in Massachusetts, and Suzanne Bickford of Jamestown and grandfather of Christopher Corsi, Samantha Corsi, Molly Koch, Cynthia Koch, Hannah Lee, Nicholas Lee and Benjamin Lee.
