Joseph P. Smith, 89
Joseph P. Smith, 89, of West Reach Drive, Jamestown, died Aug. 25, 2010, at South County Hospital. He was the husband of the late Norma G. Smith. They had been married for 60 years.
Born in Providence, he was the son of the late Joseph F. Smith and Catherine (Rigney) Smith. Mr. Smith was a communicant of St. Mark Church. He served as an officer in the U.S. Merchant Marine during WWII. Mr. Smith was vice-president and general manager for the Providence Washington Insurance Company, retiring in 1976 after 30 years of service. He was also a former director of its life insurance company and former director of Underwriters Salvage Company of Chicago.
Mr. Smith was a past member of the Union League Club of Chicago, the Turks Head Club of Providence, the Knights of Columbus in Providence and Atlanta, Ga., and a past member of the Democratic Town Committee and the Water Commission, both of Jamestown.
He is survived by five sons: Joseph P. Smith Jr. of Royal Palm Beach, Fla., Raymond P. Smith, William F. Smith, Lawrence J. Smith and Richard J. Smith, all of Jamestown; and eight daughters, Susan S. Plante of Wakefi eld, Marie (Tina) C. Kamercia of Waterford, Conn., Nancy L. Gomes, Regina A. Ford, Patricia M. Romano, Norma C. Ibarlucea, Beth E. Smith and Maureen F. Rotondo, all of Jamestown; 30 grandchildren and 21 greatgrandchildren. Mr. Smith was the father of the late Michael J. Smith, and the brother of the late Paul J. Smith, Rosemarie Swaney and Marie Smith.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday, Aug. 30, in St. Mark Church in Jamestown. Burial was private.
