Fun-filled Jamestown Day Friday evening at Ft. Getty

EDITORIAL

The newly organized Friends of Jamestown Youth invite all islanders to join them tomorrow – Friday, Oct. 1 – for an evening of old-fashioned good times at Ft. Getty.

Called “Jamestown Day,” the celebration is open to kids and adults of all ages. Activities get underway at 5 p.m. Organizers are planning something for everyone, so bring along the whole family.

Many events will center around the Ft. Getty pavilion. There will be a big bonfire up on the hill behind the pavilion. Of course, a good bonfire would not be complete without ghost stories. Those will be provided by staff from the Jamestown Philomenian Library.

It will be an evening filled with plenty of islandbased entertainment. Jamestown Community Theatre members will perform several Broadway numbers and an exhibition of unique creations will be provided by the Jamestown Arts Center.

The Jamestown Community Band will perform and local band Dead Blues Society will also play to complete the musical line-up.

If you are hungry, there will be lots of food. Pizza and hot dogs will be available for purchase, with ice cream from Spinnaker’s for dessert. Hot chocolate and coffee will be offered for free.

Those who like to play games will be well rewarded. Featured attractions include a cakewalk, a bean bag toss, an “egg on a spoon” race and a tug-of-war. Prizes will be awarded.

Admission to Jamestown Day, which starts at 5 p.m. and ends at 10 p.m., will cost $10 per car. It will cost $5 per person for individuals who come by foot or by bicycle. All of the proceeds, after expenses, will go to the Friends of the Jamestown Youth, who remind everyone that the event is alcohol free.

Organizers say the event will go on at the pavilion, even with damp weather. But should the weather turn really gnarly, Jamestown Day will be re-scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 3.
