Islander promoted to U.S.M.C. colonel

Gerry W. Leonard Jr., U.S.M.C., was promoted to the rank of colonel while stationed at the Naval War College during the summer of 2010. At the time of his promotion, he was serving as an instructor at the Naval War College.

He graduated from North Kingstown High School in 1983 and Hartwick College in 1987.

During his career, he has served his country in Desert Storm, Bangladesh, Somalia and Iraq. He is currently serving as plans chief for the coalition force in Kabul, Afghanistan.

Leonard’s family lives in Jamestown. He is the son of Gerry and Judith Leonard of North Kingstown and Englewood, Fla.
