Called “Three Generations of Metalsmiths,” the show will focus on the work of Danish metalsmith Prip (1922-2009) alongside the work of his daughter, sculptor and RISD alumna Janet Prip; and son, metalsmith Peter Prip. Robin Quigley, former student of John Prip, teaching at RISD since 1981and current Professor and Head of the Department of Jewelry and Metalsmithing at RISD; and Didi Suydam, alumna and former student of Robin Quigley, will round out the exhibit.
John Prip, known at the time for widening the scope of contemporary jewelry, in 1963 started teaching at the Rhode Island School of Design, creating a new Department of Contemporary Jewelry and Metalsmithing Design in 1969. A graduate program was established that year and an undergraduate program the next. John Prip retired in 1981after leading the program for 17 years and sculpting it into one of the top in the U.S., which continues to inspire successive generations of innovative RISD artists in jewelry and metalsmithing.
