Sachem Canonchet and his farm topic of talk
The South Kingstown Public Library in Peace Dale, will present “Canonchet, the Narragansetts, and Canonchet Farm”, a talk by local historian Richard Vangermeersch, on Sunday afternoon, Nov. 7, at 2 p.m.
Vangermeersch has immersed himself in the history of Canonchet Farm, the 174-acre property in Narragansett that now includes the South County Museum. It was once owned by Rhode Island Governor William Sprague. Sprague named his mansion on the property after the 17th- Century Narragansett Sachem Canonchet, and this talk examines who Canonchet was and why he might have been memorialized in this way.
Vangermeersch serves as treasurer and is a trustee of the Friends of Canonchet Farm.
The event is free of charge and open to the public. The library is located at 1057 Kingstown Rd., in Peace Dale. For more information, contact Jessica Wilson at 789-1555 ext 112.
