NKHS teams qualify for New England Championships
Striving for a top-three finish and needing to finish in the top six to qualify for the New England Cross Country Championships, North Kingstown High School boys’ and girls’ cross country teams challenged the state at Ponaganset High School on Sunday, Nov. 7.
Race day was “cold, but not bitter,” head coach Paul Tetreault said, whose boys’ team finished fourth behind Hendricken, La- Salle and Chariho. The first runner to the finish line for North Kingstown was Zach Seites-Rundlett, who finished ninth overall at 16:20 on the 5k course.
The girls’ team finished fifth behind La Salle, Barrington, South Kingstown and Cranston West. The top finisher for the girls was Kate Del Greco at 19:49.
Coming off of a state title for the freshmen team the week before, Jamestowners Melissa Coble, Sofia Greco-Byrne, Peyton Wallace, Emma Vogel, Rebecca Small and Isabel Crabtree led the
junior varsity girls to a secondplace
state finish on Oct. 30.
The boys’ junior varsity team, represented by Jamestowners Dan Gorelick, Ben Stewart and Jonathan Carney, finished third on the boys’ side of the state rankings.
Both coaches – Katie Wilson, a North Kingstown High School alum, for the girls, and 30-year North Kingstown coaching veteran Tetreault for the boys – expressed cautious optimism as they encouraged their varsity runners in a recent practice leading up to state meet.
With a 7-1 record in the Southern Division, the NKHS boys’ varsity cross-country team was ranked second at the end of the regular season. The girls were undefeated in the regular season and entered the meet atop the divisional rankings.
The top-six finishes qualify both varsity teams for the New England Championships that will take place on Nov. 13 in Thetford, Vt.
