Beavertail falls short in Save-A-Landmark contest

Beavertail Lighthouse, a finalist in Hampton Hotels Save-A-Landmark contest, didn’t receive enough votes and – along with International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport – was defeated by the Westerly Armory. The armory will now receive a donation from Hampton Hotels for preservation work.

The contest’s goals are to uncover hidden landmarks, track down lost landmarks and help save any landmark in need of repair. The three Rhode Island attractions competed against each other in a month-long contest where people could log onto the website and cast their votes.

Beavertail Lighthouse, which stands at the entrance of Narragansett Bay at the southernmost tip of Conanicut Island, has been a landmark in the Jamestown since 1749.
