Penguin Plunge scheduled for New Year’s Day

The 35th anniversary of the Jamestown Penguin Plunge will take place on Jan. 1 at Mackerel Cove. Hundreds at participants plan to hit the waters at noon to take part in one of the original New Year’s Day plunges in Rhode Island.

Proceeds from the event will benefit over 2,700 athletes that compete year-round in over 1,400 training opportunities and athletic competitions.

Michael McGovern, retired executive director of Special Olympics Rhode Island, came up with the idea for the plunge back in 1976. Over the past 35 years the event has transformed into one of the largest and most successful fundraising events for Special Olympics Rhode Island. It has raised over $2 million. The fundraising goal for 2011 is $60,000.
