Dalton E. Brownell

Dalton E. Brownell, born in Portsmouth on Oct. 11, 1927, died on March 18, 2011. He was the son of the late Nathan Ellery Brownell and Ruth Collar Brownell.

He leaves his wife of nearly 60 years, Ellen Arnold Brownell, two beloved daughters, Katherine M. Brownell and Barbara R. Brownell, and special “daughter” Whitney Clarke Marzano. He is survived by brother Eugene Brownell and predeceased by sisters Muriel Faloon and Marion Stetson, and brother Richard Brownell.

Dalton graduated from Rogers High School in 1945 and entered the U.S. Army where he was a radio operator. He graduated from New England Technical Institute in 1949. He was employed at Quonset Point in communications, repairs and overhaul as a radio mechanic, and later in the calibration lab as an instrument technician.

He was then employed at the Newport Naval Base in the Type 2 Navy Standards Lab as an electronics technician and ended his career at the Naval War College Gaming Department, retiring in 1989.

He joined the Jamestown Fire Department in 1949, holding every rank including chief. He retired and became a lifetime member. He belonged to the Fire Communications Officers Association of Rhode Island and the Tanker Task Force.
