Senior center receives legislative grant

Rep. Deborah Ruggiero presented a check for a $1,000 legislative grant last week to the Jamestown Senior Center.

“The senior center is a valuable resource that provides community to the seniors in our town,” said Ruggiero, who represents Jamestown and Middletown. “I’m proud to be able to help support its terrific activities.”

The grant will be used to support the operations of the center, which provides meals and activities for island senior citizens.

“I think it’s wonderful that in this economy she was able to do that for us,” said the center’s executive director, Charlotte Richardson. “We’ll put it to good use for the operations of the senior center. We’re very grateful for her help.”

Bruce Livingston, president of the Friends of the Jamestown Senior Center, said the grant is yet another reminder of the generosity of the Jamestown community, whose residents recently helped raise about $10,000 for a new roof on the Grange Hall that houses the senior center.

“We appreciate it very much,” he said. “It’s a very good feeling.”
