Donations needed for play area

As some members of the Jamestown community may be aware, the kidsROCK project is part of an overall outdoor fitness area (fitZone) envisioned for the campuses at the Lawn Avenue and Melrose Avenue Schools. kidsROCK is the name given to the climbing boulders play area to be installed behind the Lawn Avenue School in the spot of the former playground, which has been empty since the early 1990s.

The climbing boulders plan consists of several monolithic boulder structures and connecting ropes, which safely promotes play and development of climbing skills in middle school age children. The project has been endorsed by the Jamestown School Department and the Jamestown Town Council.

Approvals, such as the key Rhode Island Historic Preservation Commission archeological clearance, while a long time in coming, were finally received last year and the project is now ready to get off the ground. The project budget is $68,000 with the intention of raising half that amount through local fundraising efforts. The remaining balance is hoped to come through a matching Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management Recreation grant this fall. Fundraising to date has included donations from the Laurie Foundation, the Leigha Carlisle Memorial Scholarship Fund, the Jamestown Parent Teacher Organization, the Lawn Avenue School Student Council and several other private donations.

A fantastic fundraiser held last May by the kidsROCK fundraising committee and hosted by the Laurie Family was held at Dragonline and netted over $9,300 for the project’s coffers. So far, nearly $18,000 has been raised for the project, so we are just over the halfway mark of our monetary goal before the matching grant is applied. The project continues to seek donations from any and all members of the Jamestown community. Donations are tax deductible and anyone who wishes to contribute can send a check made out to Town of Jamestown to kidsROCK project, 25 West Passage Drive, Jamestown, RI 02835. If anyone has any questions on the project design or fundraising, please call me at 423-3353. Any contributions to this wonderful project are greatly appreciated.
