We appreciate our island teachers

This year marks the first of the state’s new education funding formula. Jamestown is slated to lose a significant portion of our state funding over the next 10 years. Meanwhile, health care and pension costs continue to soar. The Jamestown School Committee recognizes with gratitude the essential role our teachers played during last year’s contract negotiations to partner with the community to help meet these challenges and move the system forward. The School Committee deeply appreciates Jamestown teachers’ dedication and professionalism.

By necessary design, school contracts and budgets reduce the fabric of school life to columns of numbers. The Jamestown School Committee welcomes the opportunity to celebrate the actual fabric — the closely woven collaboration of teachers, administrators and community members who are committed to providing a healthy, challenging learning environment in our schools.

May 3 is National Teacher Appreciation Day. The Town Council has proclaimed May 2 through May 6 as Teacher Appreciation Week in Jamestown. Please join the School Committee in saluting the teachers and leadership of Jamestown schools and gratefully acknowledging their many significant contributions to public education — and to our community.
