Emma Vogel wins JCC’s annual music award

The Jamestown Community Chorus presented its fifth annual music award to Emma Vogel on May 8 at the “Spring Fling” concert at Central Baptist Church.

Emma is a ninth grader at North Kingstown High School and has been playing music since taking up the recorder when she and her family lived in New Zealand. Since moving to Jamestown, Emma has played trumpet and tuba in the middle school band and now plays tuba and valve trombone at the high school. She recently tied for first place on tuba at the Rhode Island Music Educators Association all state ensembles.

Emma will use her award to further her studies on trombone and to attend a brass weekend workshop at the Berklee College of Music in Boston. In his letter of support, Leland Brown, Emma’s tuba teacher and middle school band director, described her as a student who is willing to give her time and energy to support the organizations in which she participates.

The purpose of the $500 award is to encourage the growth of music in Jamestown and is made possible by the support received from individuals and businesses in Jamestown and surrounding communities.
