Mary (Weygant) Waldman

Mary (Weygant) Waldman, beloved wife of the late Capt. Joseph R. Waldman, United States Navy, died June 15, 2011, at Forest Farm Healthcare Centre in Middletown. She was 87.

Born June 28, 1923, in New York City, Mary was the daughter of the late Theodore Stockbridge Weygant and Loretta Freely Weygant and was the oldest of five children. Her father was an electrician who worked on the Empire State Building. The family later lived in Central Valley, N.Y., and Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. It is there that she met and married her husband in 1944, days before he reported for duty aboard an aircraft carrier headed for the Pacific.

Mary had a keen intellect and after raising seven children, earned a bachelor’s degree in history and a master’s degree in library science. She worked as a librarian in Fort Lauderdale and at Rocky Hill School in East Greenwich and as a teacher in Fort Lauderdale.

She also volunteered for many organizations including as a docent at the Gilbert Stuart Birthplace and Museum in North Kingstown and St. Paul’s Old Narragansett Church in Wickford. Mary’s life centered around home and family. She will be remembered for her love of learning and words and her gift for transforming old houses into stately homes. She read extensively and, after being diagnosed with a vision impairment, simply switched to books on tape. She took part in numerous community theater productions over the years and, in her later life, traveled widely with her husband.

Besides her children and their spouses: Christine (and Michael) Boudreau, of Naples, Fla.; Dr. Stephanie Waldman of Laguna Beach, Calif.; Joseph R. (and Donna) Waldman, of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; Loretta Waldman (and David Owens), of West Hartford, Conn.; Michael (and Rebecca) Waldman, of Shanghai, China; Cornelia (and Richard) Trahan, of Warwick; Erika (and Aitor) Aldazabal, of Middletown; she is survived by her 10 grandchildren (Kate Gerson, Allison Benedict, Lauren and Karl Waldman, Lily Owens, Max Waldman, Amaia, Michelle, Jasmine and Eva Aldazabal), four great-grandchildren, and three of her four siblings and their spouses: David (and Mary Lou) Weygant and Jack (and Frances) Weygant, of Lake Placid, Fla.; and Joan (and Noel) Lonschein, of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; her cousin Elizabeth Michel, of Alexandria, Va.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her brother Theodore Weygant.
