Seal rescued from Ft. Getty released to sea

On June 28, Mystic Aquarium’s Animal Rescue Team, in collaboration with Shoals Marine Laboratory, released a harbor seal pup named Calliope at the Isle of Shoals off of Portsmouth, N.H. A vocal pup, she was named Calliope, meaning “beautiful voice,” by rescue team volunteers.

Calliope was rescued on April 10 from Jamestown after being monitored for 24 hours with no mother in site. She was deemed abandoned and premature because she contained a full lanugo coat, which is typically shed in utero before birth. It’s estimated that Calliope was two to three days old at collection time because she had a full pink umbilical cord, which was carefully cleaned during her rehabilitation.

Calliope was tube fed for the first two weeks of her stay at Mystic Aquarium’s Seal Rescue Clinic, and then slowly moved onto a full fish diet. She learned how to eat fish quickly and was removed from all medications late-May.
