Women’s club gives back to community

The Jamestown Women’s Club had its final meeting for the 2010- 11 year on May 17 where we chose the two $1,000 scholarships for two Jamestowners graduating from high school this year. The recipients were Samantha Bucklin and Christien Tiexiera. We also gave scholarships to two Jamestown school graduates.

Some of the activities we did this past year included the Annual Easter Egg Hunt, starring Felicia Faria as our bunny; together with the Jamestown Press put out the Jamestown Phone Directory (these are sent out to every household in Jamestown); we donated scholarship money in memory of Matt Barber to the Barton Center to help local Jamestown residents attend the camp. This camp is for diabetic children to help them get the most out of life, become competent in treating their disease and gain confidence by seeing others just like themselves.

We also made a donation to the Jamestown Philomenian Library toward their new copier and gave donations to the Rocket ’hogs for the Fourth of July fireworks and to the Jack O’ Lantern Jog 5k. We adopted a family at Christmas, gave to the Jamestown food pantry and served refreshments at the tree lighting.

Also, we officially changed our name from the Junior Women’s Club to the Jamestown Women’s Club and we want to thank Kerry Sheehan from Silk & Embroidery of New England for designing our new logo for our banner.

Our next meeting for new members will be at the Jamestown library on Oct. 17 from 3:15 to 5 p.m. If you have any questions about the club or are interested in joining, please call Cynthia Smith at 423- 0025.
