PHOTO BY JEFF MCDONOUGH PHOTO BY JEFF MCDONOUGH The 34th annual Fools’ Rule Regatta will be held Saturday, Aug. 20, at 9 a.m. at East Ferry town beach.

Construction of the sailing crafts will begin with the firing of the cannon and contestants will have two hours to build their vessels from nonmarine items. All vessels must be wind-powered and crew must wear U.S. Coast Guard-approved life preservers.

Awards will be given to the first three finishers in each of the five classes immediately after the final race. Other accolades include awards for the most ingenious design, the worst example of naval architecture and the Frank Newman Judges Award, which is given to the boat and crew with the best historical theme.

The event is free and open to the public for both participants and spectators. Rain date will be Sunday, Aug. 21.
