Church celebrates 175 years with organ recital
George Matthew Jr. will perform an organ recital at St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church on Sunday, Aug. 28, at 4 p.m. as part of the church’s 175th anniversary celebration.
Matthew will play a program of Russian organ music from the 19th and 20th centuries. He is director of music at First United Methodist Church of Burlington, Vt., and has been carillonneur of Middlebury College and Norwich University since 1986. He is also an accompanist for the Middlebury College Community Chorus and an organist for All Souls Interfaith Gathering in Shelburne, Vt. In 2005, Matthew was named Artist of the Year by the Vermont Chapter American Guild of Organists.
The concert is free and open to the public and will be followed by a reception.
Dr. Charles W. Robinson baptized Matthew, and his godmother was the late Betty Robinson. Both were longtime summer residents of Jamestown and active in St. Matthew’s Church. Matthew played his first organ recital on the island in 1951 at the age of 16.
