Lifeguards at town beach not doing job

I’m writing because there doesn’t seem to be any supervision of the lifeguards at Mackerel Cove. On Aug. 6 around 10:30 a.m. none of the lifeguards were on the beach. They were all out in the parking lot talking to someone. On Aug. 13 around 10:30 a.m., one lifeguard was swimming while another was talking to friends with her back turned to the beach.

During this time a boat was trying to land on the west end of the beach. Neither one of them noticed. When we yelled for the guards, the one in the water started to yell at the one on the beach. Then they both walked down. By this time, the boat was gone.

I know most mornings they are sitting at the foot of the shack, but they just don’t seem to be watching the beach. I’m guessing that next summer most of these guards will be at other beaches, which would never tolerate behavior like this. I know it can be a boring job sometimes – I used to be a lifeguard at Mackerel.

Maybe we should just be happy that this group isn’t getting drunk.
