Tomorrow is deadline to announce candidacy for School Committee
Secretary of State A. Ralph Mollis is reminding Jamestown residents that the deadline for throwing their hat in the ring for School Committee is Friday, Aug. 26, at 4 p.m.
Anyone wishing to run for offi ce has two days to file official Declarations of Candidacy with the Jamestown Board of Canvassers: Thursday, Aug. 25, and Friday, Aug. 26. State law requires residents to be registered voters in Jamestown in order to be eligible to run for office.
Candidates must gather 50 valid signatures to appear on the ballot and must return nomination papers to Town Hall by Tuesday, Sept. 6, at 4 p.m. In order to be valid, signatures must come from registered voters from the town of Jamestown.
Two School Committee seats will be on the ballot. The seats will have three-year terms ending in 2014, after which the seats will have four-year terms. This is due to a ballot question that passed in 2009, which extended a one-time one-year extension for town offi- cials. The amendment was passed to ensure local elections would coincide with state and national elections.
If necessary, a primary will be held on Oct. 4. The election will be held on Nov. 8.
